Ten universities across Ohio sent teams of six students each to Columbus to compete in the annual Estimating Competition. The emphasis of the competition is on the students’ learning, beginning with the time-compressed nature of real-life bidding situations. The problems are designed so teams cannot arrive at a certain answer, requiring them to make assumptions and put their education and any construction experience to the test. They must use critical thinking and organizational skills to get through the rigors of the competition just to “turn in the bid.”
In addition, they must tap their presentation and communication skills to score well in the oral portion. To be successful, each group of students must understand and practice teamwork. Thank you to Axis Construction for providing this year’s project.
