Company: Shook Construction Co., a construction company that serves clients in 13 states from its offices in Cleveland, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Dayton, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.
Title/Position:Preconstruction Coordinator
Years Working in Construction: 15 years
How Leah Started in Construction: Jennifer was recruited to work as the Executive Assistant to the Leadership of Shook Construction, and she worked in that role for many years before joining the Preconstruction team. Her background of accounting, technical documentation, and Board of Directors support initially got her the job, but over time, Jennifer has really enjoyed learning about the construction industry.
What Leah Loves Most About Her Job: “Getting the win.”
What Does It Mean to Leah to Be a Women in Construction? “I’m proud to play a role in our company and in the construction industry. Women are few, but they are mighty.”
What Career Advice Does Leah Offer to Women Considering a Career in Construction?
I would say, “Do it! Do not be afraid of the stereotypes and the limitations. The industry is changing. There are more young women out there working in the field, developing their skill, growing into leadership positions, and even working behind the scenes than ever before. Working in a male-dominated industry can be challenging at times, but if you are dedicated and work hard, you can be successful.”
