This year, the Ohio Department of Transportation has big plans for all 12 of our state’s districts. Their plans include investing more than $2 billion in our state infrastructure to be used in more than 1,000 projects state-wide.
These significant changes support the Ohio Department of Transportation’s mission to “provide easy movement of people and goods from place to place.” We at I Build America – Ohio are thrilled to see they are continuing their dedication to their mission statement, which promises to:
- Take care of what we have.
The Ohio Department of Transportation is committed to maintaining what our state’s citizens have worked so hard to build over the previous decades. That’s why 90% of this year’s projects are dedicated to preserving the current system. This strategy of working with, rather than against, our current infrastructure, will save time and money for taxpayers and construction workers alike.
- Make our system work better.
Our state is known for being the “heart of it all,” as our highway systems help connect northern states to southern, eastern to western. But with the many years of commutes and cross-country trips, our roadways are in need of some support. In 2019, the Ohio Department of Transportation will be working on more than 5,000 miles of pavement to keep Ohioans, and its passers-by, moving smoothly and safely.
- Improve safety.
The Ohio Department of Transportation shares our vision for a safer roadway system, from the start at the construction site to the years of safe access following its completion. They have slated 246 safety projects for this year’s construction season. But they’re not stopping there. In addition, they have plans for 25 major projects, each exceeding $10 million.
- Enhance capacity.
Our cities draw in more residents and visitors year after year. To handle this increasing influx of individuals, our communities need to be better equipped, which is why 10% of the projected projects are dedicated to enhancing capacity. Of course, capacity can only continue with the help of safe bridges to connect communities. This year, the Ohio Department of Transportation has plans to improve 871 bridges throughout our state.
Together, these projects will help keep Ohio’s people and economy moving.
