The construction industry attracts new people to its workforce every year across its range of skilled trades. From painters to project managers, the unique jobs available offer opportunities unlike any other industry. Sure, the tasks are exciting and ever-changing, but what keeps these individuals in the construction industry for years to come?
The USG Corporation + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index (CCI) recently took a poll of U.S. construction workers currently working in the industry to find out. Their research provides an exclusive insider’s perspective on why anyone interested in skilled trades should join the construction industry, directly from those who know it best.
While respondents expressed many reasons to become a part of the industry, the following are the top three reasons they say anyone should choose a career in construction:
#1 – Earning potential (70%)
The majority of construction workers (7 out of 10) agree that the incredible earning potential is the top reason to join the construction industry. From the start, individuals in the construction industry can earn an excellent income. But it’s the growth opportunity that encourages people to stick around. Year after year, those in the construction industry are rewarded for a job well done and expertise gain, unlike any other career.
Keep in mind that many careers in construction begin without a mountain of school debt to pay back, thanks to apprenticeships as well as specialized trade and technical schools. So, it’s no wonder that the second-highest reason for joining the construction industry is in regards to how far you can go.
#2 – Opportunities for career advancement (43%)
Nearly half of respondents agree that, in addition to the extra income they receive, the opportunity to take on advanced roles with more responsibility and higher level positions is a top reason they recommend working in the construction industry. With hard work and dedication, there’s no such thing as a glass ceiling or stagnant career here.
We love hearing the incredible success stories of people who have diligently worked their way up from apprentice-level to managerial. That hard-working attitude and passion for learning makes skilled tradesmen and women successful (and a breed of their own), which takes us to the third reason construction workers recommend working in the industry.
#3 – Ability to gain skills on the job (37%)
While career success is an obvious top concern for those working in the industry, respondents say the job alone is reward enough. More than one third reported they have learned valuable skills while on the job. Each job offers an opportunity to learn through working, unlike any other career path. Every day provides a chance to grow. And, the longer an individual is in the industry, the more they hone their trade and excel.
