It’s Women in Construction Week! Each year, I Build America Ohio takes the opportunity during Women in Construction Week to share the stories of the women across the state who make up our great industry. The stories of these women show the diverse backgrounds, interests, skills, and talents that are part of the work we do–and we encourage more women of all ages and interests to consider careers in construction.
You can follow along as the nation celebrates its female construction workforce. Check out the hashtag #WICWeek2022 and #IBuildAmericaOhio!
The Women of Ohio’s Workforce: Meet Donna
Name: Donna Blanco
Position:Product Support Manager
Company: Ohio CAT
How many years have you been working in construction?
I have been working for 23 years in construction as of February 15, 2022.
How did you get started in the construction industry?
A friend asked me if I was interested in a warehouse job. In my current job at that time, I was as far advanced as I could go. There was no more room for growth. So I took the opportunity to try something different.
What do you love about working in construction?
I love that our owner cares about his employees, the everyday challenges – although at times can be overwhelming, interacting and forming relationships with all of our different customers, knowing that what we go makes a difference, and that every day is different which motivates me to learn more.
In your experience, what do women bring to the construction industry?
We are naturally nurturing. Because of this, I feel we can see different sides, ideas, plans rather than just numbers and deadlines.
If you were to give young women (high school students) advice about beginning a career in construction, what would you say?
I would say if construction is something that interests you, go for it 100% and prove yourself! Don’t let stereotype or gender at all distract you from doing what you want to do. Have the confidence and use your knowledge and skills to your advantage.
