It’s Women in Construction Week! Each year, I Build America Ohio takes the opportunity during Women in Construction Week to share the stories of the women across the state who make up our great industry. The stories of these women show the diverse backgrounds, interests, skills, and talents that are part of the work we do–and we encourage more women of all ages and interests to consider careers in construction. You can follow along as the nation celebrates its female construction workforce. Check out the hashtag #WICWeek2022 and #IBuildAmericaOhio!
The Women of Ohio’s Workforce: Meet Julie
Name: Julie Farthing
Company: John G Johnson Construction
Title/Position: Preconstruction Manager
Years working in construction: 27 years
In your experience, what do women bring to the construction industry?
Women bring a fresh perspective and different skills to the construction industry. Women generally excel at problem solving, collaboration, and multi-tasking, all of which are mandatory construction skills.
In what ways does your company support more women joining the industry?
There are several ways that John G Johnson supports women, as well as general diversity in the industry: They have a few women in leadership positions, who serve as mentors to less experienced staff. They are a family friendly workplace, really encouraging a positive work-life balance. They encourage open and honest communication between all team members.
What do you like most about working in construction?
I love the variety of projects that I have seen throughout my career, as well as being able to see projects at all different phases of construction. The finished projects are a source of pride for me. Projects that will be there for years that I can point out to friends and family, knowing I had a part in getting that project built.
If you were to give young women (high schoolers) advice about beginning a career in construction, what would you say?
I would tell young women entering the construction industry to be open to new opportunities. Ask questions about things you don’t know or are interested in. Be confident in your abilities. And don’t be afraid to stick up for yourself.
