I Build America – Ohio is dedicated to celebrating the women of construction. Women are a vital part of our industry, and there are female leaders at all levels of construction work. From foreman to company owners and executives, construction wouldn’t be the industry it is without its female employees. Join us and our partners in celebrating the success of women within your own company and across the nation during National Women in Construction Week 2023.

What was your path to a career in construction?
I was previously a recruiter for a logistics company and during the pandemic there was a huge demand for work in our company. I was tired of the work that came with my last job and I wanted to make a change, so I applied for my current role. My dad has been in construction my whole life, just like his dad, so it was awesome to have another thing in common! I love being able to tell my dad about the cool machines I get to see and to understand my dad’s work a little more. I am so proud to work in a field similar to my dad and grandfather.
What do you like most about working in construction?
I love the teamwork and the knowledge that comes with being in this environment. I get to hear about new things every day and it helps you understand more about the growing world around you.
What do you hope to see for the future of women in construction?
I hope that women are more present in the future of construction. There are tons of great jobs out here in the trade and it is a great option if a typical college plan isn’t for you. Learning skills like construction or working with tools helps women to be more independent; we don’t need to call our dads/husbands/brothers when we want some work done! I hope more women channel their inner “Rosie the Riveter” and join the workforce because we can do it!
What advice would you give to a young woman considering a career in construction?
I would say it is a great way to start your working life with a good income and benefits. The trades need help and the world is just getting bigger every day. There is a huge demand for this industry and we can’t just count out a trade because it isn’t a typical “girl job”. I would tell young women that they can break those gender roles and be their own hero. The work is rewarding and you are a huge part in growing this country and keeping it moving.
