What was your path to a career in construction? In high school I worked for my dad as a construction clerk. He taught me the ropes of the industry in a way that made it less intimidating. I loved the work, and the opportunity to be closer to my dad. From there I went to the University of Cincinnati and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. I have worked many roles in the industry, from managing projects to now managing the marketing side of the business for our organization.
What do you like most about working in construction? I love that we are creating something finite. At the end of a project you can look back and say, “I built that”. The industry also gives you access to things most people don’t get to see. Through the projects i have been involved in i have been able to see behind the scenes in so many different businesses. You really learn how things work.
This year’s theme is “Keys to the Future.” What is the key to the future of construction in Ohio? Investing in workforce development initiatives is essential for addressing the skilled labor shortage in the construction industry. Ohio must work to create programs that provide training, apprenticeships, and education in construction trades, as well as initiatives to attract and retain diverse talent. By investing in the next generation of construction professionals and creating pathways for career advancement, Ohio can ensure a skilled and sustainable workforce for the future.
If you were to give young women (high schoolers) advice about beginning a career in construction, what would you say? The industry needs you. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Don’t let stereotypes or societal norms discourage you from pursuing a career in construction. Your skills, passion, and dedication are what the industry needs to continue to evolve.
